Don't frack with me!
It might sound funny, but trust me, it is no laughing matter.
Hydraulic fracturing or fracking is a means of natural gas extraction employed in deep natural gas well drilling.
Once a well is drilled, millions of gallons of water, sand and undeclared* chemicals are injected into underground wells, under extremely high pressure. The pressure then fractures the shale beneath the underground water and creates fissures in enable natural gas to flow up from the basin floor and out of the well.
It is an environmentally catastrophic proces.
But why is our government not protecting us from this hazardous life-threatening process? Didn't they pass the Safe Drinking Water Act (1974) for this exact purpose?
Yes. They did, but former President George Bush (and FVP Dick Cheney) exempted natural gas from disclosing the chemicals used during hydraulic fracturing. The bill is officially titled the 2005 Bush an Cheney Energy Bill, but to those that deal with it every day it is commonly called: The Halliburton Loophole.
The FRAC Act (Fraturing Responsibility and Awareness to Chemical Act) is a House bill intended to close/repeal the Haliburton loophole.
So where is the problem? What proof is there that franking is a bad thing?
Aside from the many testimonials, reports and vlogs about the devastating impact of fracking, the energy vast per and scope of the energy industry means that the debate over fracking has been framed around national security and oil dependence instead of environmental protection and human health. The biggest challenge facing the Green Movement is to refocus the debate on the irrefutable scientific evidence:
- 1. Poor cement well casings that leak natural gas and franking fluid into drinking water wells.
- 2. Even though 80-300 tons of chemicals are used, they are not disclosed due to the Haliburton loop hole. Scientists have identified benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene.
- 3. Of the 1-8 million gallons of water used, only 30-50% of the water is typically recovered from the well.
- 4. The wastewater is highly toxic and trucked to wastewater facilities.
- 5. Evaporators evaporate off the chemicals and condensate the water in tanks, converting it to steam that is directly released into the sky.
- 6. Ozone is produced when wastewater is evaporated from contact with diesel exhaust from trucks and generators at the well site.
And if you don't believe me, here is a video from anti-fracking advocate, and CurrentTV contributor, Mark Ruffalo, who has made it his mission to bring the horrors of fracking to the Nation's attention.
